Russell Gruzosky died - twice - in 2014. The dogs he cared for at MACS literally saved his life - as they gave him purpose to live.

This man - Russell, inspired another man - Dave, to save his pit bull from being put to death.

Russell Gruzosky is now on a mission! He used to work at the Michigan Anti Cruelty Society - MACS for a little more than a year, but no more.

Too many dogs were being put to death every single day - and Russell could no longer tolerate the mass euthanization of healthy dogs.

What is the effect of protesting a facility like MACS? It is the hope by Russell and his peers to generate as much awareness of the current situation as possible and save as many dogs as he can.

Dave, a young man with a Pit Bull who wandered up to MACS during one such protest is a one of Russell's successes. Dave, thought the Michigan Anti Cruelty Society was a "no kill" shelter. If Dave would have come at any other time, than during this protest, this pittie would have been put to death within minutes of being signed over.

How scary is this scenario to you? How would you feel if you saved a dogs life, only to turn it in to a place that you thought would keep it alive. Not kill it within minutes. There may not be any more horrific nightmare than this for an animal lover.

Detroit's infamous ruinous Packard Motor Car Plant - famous now for Raves and being the backdrop and present day visual icon - along with Detroit's Central Rail Station - for the city - is the scene for this contemporary tale of man saves dog and dog saves man.

Bruce Giffin is a Detroit Kresge Arts grant recipient and dog lover. He's been taking students on expedition of Detroit's Packard Plant for years with his stray dogs.
