This is Part 3 of a 5 Part series on how to help Monarch Butterfly eggs reach adulthood. As of 2014, the Eastern and Midwestern Monarchs of North America are doing very poorly, having record low numbers. This series has been made in the hopes of allowing those who wish to take an active role in helping out the Monarch be able to do so.

Part 3 details a way to properly care for your newly hatched caterpillar(s), including feeding, cleaning, and storage. The video also shows the transition instars on the caterpillar's way to the chrysalis.

Please post comments, questions, and suggestions relating to the video information or your own Monarch Butterfly experiences!

Are the Monarch Butterflies an endangered species? Actually, no. As an entire species, they are not in jeopardy. Still, the populations that exist in North America have declined in number at alarming rates. In 2014, the Monarch Butterfly was petitioned to be added to the Endangered Species List as a "threatened" species. The final decision as to whether they will be added is scheduled to occur in December of 2020. If that happens, how will things change for those who rear Monarchs at home, or in the classroom? What are the positives and negatives? This episode tries to explore the ins and outs of it.

There are times when, even if you've done everything correctly, a Monarch may come out of your rearing process that is unable to fly. Whether this is due to deformities in the wings, or damage it incurs when it has just come out of the chrysalis, if you raise enough Monarchs, you're likely to encounter this situation eventually. What do we do with an adult that can not fly? In this episode, three options are discussed. No option is ideal, as it's not an ideal situation. Still, these three were chosen to explore because each one does have an amount of logic supporting it. If you are raising Monarchs, it's recommended that you decide how you feel about this first, before you encounter it, so that you are ready to handle it.
